Promoting Just Society
Safe and Creative Child Rights Reporting
Faculty of Communication Arts, represented by Suthawan Thammasangwan, was selected to take part in the Model Media Producer Development Programme for Safe and Creative Child Rights Reporting. The program is supported by the Thai Media Fund in partnership with the Isra Institute of the Thai Press Development Foundation. It promotes news production that respects the rights, dignity and best interests of children at every stage, from choosing a story and working with sources to deciding how to publish, in an era when anyone can act as a media producer.
The programme began on 30 May 2026 with a two-day training workshop that presented children as rights-holders whose safety, dignity and best interests must be protected in all reporting. It stressed that journalists, content producers, parents, teachers and community members all share responsibility for a safe and creative media environment for children, because every report, shared post and message can affect a child’s life and future. On 24 June 2026, the lecturer submitted a story outline titled “Child Rights When Everyone Is a Media Producer: When Those Closest to Children May Unknowingly Violate Their Rights.” The proposal examined how parents, teachers and relatives often share children’s photographs, videos and personal stories online. Although this usually comes from love or pride, it can compromise children’s privacy, dignity and safety. The planned in-depth feature would draw on interviews with young people, parents, child psychologists and child rights experts, supported by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the principle of the best interests of the child, and research on “sharenting” and digital footprints. It aimed to raise awareness and propose ways to create a “safe zone for children online.” On 20 August 2026, after the faculty had co-produced the story as a model of child rights reporting for the digital age, the lecturer took part in a lessons-learned session reviewing the production process and received a certificate from the Thai Media Fund and the Isra Institute. The faculty will bring these lessons into its teaching so that communication arts students understand the ethical and legal principles of protecting children’s rights in news reporting and can produce high-quality, socially responsible media.
