Inclusive and Equal Opportunities for All
WAHEN and the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Equitable Student Success
https://worldaccesshe.com/global-communities/ai-data-and-new-frontiers-for-higher-education-equity/
The World Access to Higher Education Network (WAHEN) examines how artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven approaches can advance equity, inclusion, and student success in higher education systems worldwide. Its work centers on three main concerns. (1) equitable access: WAHEN addresses the systemic barriers that prevent students from low-income and under-represented backgrounds from entering and completing higher education. (2) balance between opportunity and risk: AI has the potential to personalize learning, reduce administrative burdens, and improve student retention. However, it also carries risks, including algorithmic bias, threats to privacy, and the possibility of deepening existing inequalities. (3) global collaboration: Through initiatives such as the WAHEN AI Community, the network brings together researchers, policymakers, and institutional leaders to promote transparent, human-centered educational technologies.
WAHEN will organize the World Access to Higher Education Day (WAHED) 2026 on 24 November 2026 under the theme “AI, Advocacy and Action – Making equality in HE happen.” It will be organized as a series of coordinated global and regional sessions spanning multiple time zones:
•
Asia-Pacific Regional Launch (hybrid): Held in Sydney, Australia, in partnership with the Equity Practitioners in Higher Education Association (EPHEA). It will feature an opening keynote and panel discussions on student engagement and systemic equity.
•
Global Online Conference (virtual): A free, multi-hour summit connecting participants across five continents. Sessions include an OECD global, a European Commission policy outlook, and a discussion of institutional frameworks and advocacy.
•
Global Research Launch: The official presentation of the report Can AI Unlock Access to Higher Education?, which analyzes data from more than 50 countries.
In preparation for the  WAHED 2026, a global roundtable was organized virtually on September 7, 2026, Professor Dr. Chanita Rukspolmuang, Vice President of Siam University was invited as an Asian representative.

Siam University and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have veen working collabortely since 2023 starting wirh accepting six refugee students from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka to the International College. Since then, refugee students were enrolled at the university. In 2025, we accepted 4 more students under this agreement. This collaboration aims to ensure a more inclusive access to higher education for refugees in pursuing their academic goals at Siam University. To continue this humanitarian cooperation and the Sustainable Development Goals, on 29 July 2026, Siam University signed a MoU with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) in Bangkok. The University was represented by its President, Dr. Pornchai Mongkhonvanit. The agreement aims to strengthen collaboration in education, youth capacity development, and the promotion of humanitarian values at the international level. The MoU formalizes a partnership that has developed over more than six years through joint activities centered on social responsibility. It has three principal objectives. The first is to raise global awareness of refugee issues, human rights, and social equity. The second is to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The third is to give students and staff opportunities to take part in global initiatives that foster a sense of global citizenship. This agreement reinforces Siam University’s aspiration to become a leading sustainability-oriented institution. It also serves as a mechanism for producing graduates who combine academic expertise with humanitarian awareness. In this way, the University aims to create lasting positive impact for Thailand and the international community.
